Dark brown dye over faded red hair dye.?

ok so my natural color is dark brown. and i dyed my hair bright red. its faded now to almost a brownish red. Im wondering where my roots are growing out i dont wanna go back red, could i dye it over with a dark bron hair color?? will it work, i heard red is hard to get out.
